The subject of the painting refers to the history of the Polabian lands, which are now northern Germany and before the period of Christianization, the lands of Slavic tribes. One of such largest Slavic tribes was called the Obodrites. The painting is a magical, dream vision emerging from distant history and the roots of Slavism.
